Wightlink Ferries are supporting a creative arts project which invites Islanders, holidaymakers and people who cross the Solent for all kinds of reasons, to share their experiences of travelling by water.
Over the next few months, singer-songwriters, poets and a photographer will be talking to customers and staff on ferries, including Wightlink’s Yarmouth to Lymington route, to gain inspiration for artworks on the theme of arrivals and departures.
The Ferry Tales project is supported with public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The Ferry Tales artists are: poets, Robyn Bolam and Lydia Fulleylove, singer-songwriters, Paul Armfield and Dom Prag and photographer, Mark Lanigan. Writers, Maggie Sawkins and Philip Hoare will also be involved in some events.
The project will be launched at a performance in St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery on Friday 8th July as part of this year’s Lymington Arts Festival and will conclude with events and exhibitions at Dimbola Museum & Galleries and the Lymington Arts Festival in 2017.
Robyn explained:
“We are really looking forward to connecting with Wightlink in this part of the project to discover what travelling by ferry means to people. We want to create new songs and poems that include the voices of passengers and crew”.
Wightlink Operations Director, Elwyn Dop added:
“We are pleased to welcome the artists on board and are looking forward to hearing our customers’ stories about one of the world’s most beautiful ferry journeys”.
