The Friends of Northwood Cemetery are inviting the public to explore the historic grounds, restored chapel and heritage centre during a special open day later this month.
The event will take place on Saturday 18th July between 11:00 and 15:00, giving visitors the opportunity to discover more about the work carried out by the Friends of Northwood Cemetery to preserve and maintain the Isle of Wight’s second oldest and largest cemetery.
Guests will be able to look around the chapel and the Heritage Resource Centre, both of which have been undergoing restoration since 2017, and learn more about the group’s ongoing efforts to support the cemetery and the wider community.
A number of local organisations will also be attending, including Ability Dogs 4 Young People, Bay Tree Florist and the Red Squirrel Trust.
There will be plenty for families to enjoy, with children’s activities including gingerbread decorating, Lego building and rock painting. The Friends will also be showcasing the programme of talks held at the Heritage Resource Centre, while the Green Team will be displaying the results of its work within the cemetery grounds and selling plants and garden tools.
Chairman Roger Williams will lead a series of short guided walks around the cemetery, sharing fascinating stories about some of the people buried there and the history behind their graves.
A tombola and refreshments will also be available throughout the day.
“This open day is a brilliant opportunity for the Friends of Northwood Cemetery to connect with the community, display and talk to visitors about what we do and also to show off the beautiful surroundings the grounds have to offer.
“It is also a chance to let people know that we also host a coffee morning every Saturday for anyone to come along and receive a truly warm welcome from the team too.”
