Wight Tri’s summer series continued at Yaverland on Sunday (9th August), with competitors taking on the club’s latest Aquabike event.
Warm water and a lively breeze greeted competitors for the fourth event of the summer series, which also saw the return of experienced GB athlete Liz Dunlop following a winter spent in Cyprus.
The Aquabike offered competitors a choice of distances, beginning with either one or two laps of a 250m swimming course off Yaverland. Although the wind provided an additional challenge in the water, the warm conditions meant competitors were able to race without wetsuits.
Once back on dry land, participants headed out on the bike leg, with a choice between the full 19km course and a shorter 10.3km route towards Bembridge and back.
As well as completing the swim and bike disciplines, competitors were attempting to finish as close as possible to their nominated time.
Team Mike and Jurgita took 1st place after finishing just 23 seconds away from their predicted time. Craig Wilson was only 25 seconds out to claim 2nd, while Trevor McAlister completed the top 3 after coming within 39 seconds of his prediction.
After the racing, competitors and volunteers gathered for hot drinks and cake, while Anne Dines was the winner of the raffle and received a Wight Tri Sports bottle.
Wight Tri thanked volunteers Lucy, Rob and Blake Doorly, Neil Cooper, Steve and Anne Dines, Kev Winchcombe and Loic Le Floch for helping to stage the event.
The club’s summer programme continues with the Totland Aquathon on Friday 21st August at 18:30, with the event open to all.
