An 81-year-old motorist has denied causing serious injury by careless driving after a car mounted the pavement during a multi-vehicle crash in Ryde more than 2 years ago.
Old aged pensioner Nicholas Phipps, of Binstead Lodge Road, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates earlier today (Friday) where he denied a single charge of cause serious injury by careless/inconsiderate driving.
The charge relates to a multi-vehicle collision at the junction of Cross Street and George Street in Ryde back in May 2024.
It is alleged that Phipps, driving a blue Kia Picanto, seriously injured a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement.
It is said that the pedestrian suffered injuries to the scapula and more than a dozen fractured ribs.
Phipps elected for the case to be heard before the Isle of Wight Crown Court and so the case was adjourned.
The 81-year-old was bailed unconditionally to appear before a judge on 14th September.
Should there be a maximum driving age.
80 years of age is a great time to call it a day.
Soon there will be driverless vehicles on UK roads
so there will be no age limit, but driving personal vehicles
80 years of age is enough for anyone.

Mr. Phipps, the driver of the Kia Picanto has been charged with careless driving and quite honestly I do not see why or how he could be.
The 25 May 2024 photo of the Renault Captur shows a huge amount of front end and off side front damage. Indeed, the front of the car is almost trashed.
The photo to which you refer of the Kia on the pavement, shows a considerable mount of front end and NEAR side front damage.
Having driven that junction many times, I would venture to suggest that Mr. Phipps in his Kia was turning right from George Street into Cross Street as he is entitled to do without hindrance of stop or give way signage to hinder his progress.
The driver of the Renault Captur on the other hand, appears to have ignored the give way signage to turn left from George Street southbound into eastbound Cross Street and appears to have collided with the front/near side of the Kia, forcing the Kia to swerve to the left, mount the pavement and mow down the pedestrian.
The photograph of the Kia on the pavement crashed into the road sign, gives a biased and false picture of the proceedings.
It is pretty obvious that the Renault caused this accident.
That is a dodgy junction due to vehicles not stopping at the
giveway markings.
Given that this man has elected a Crown Court trial, justice will not be served by idle speculation in the local newspapers and social media. Evidence will be properly adduced in a court and until then the correct course of action to be fair to all would be t turn off comments on the matter.
What is very worrying is that the case has only just reached the first hearing at the Magistrates Court after more than two years. How long will it be before it is tried at the Crown Court?

It is getting to the stage bollards needs to be placed
along certain roads, better to hit a bollards than a
pedestrian.
That is why I keep going on about vehicles parking inside a
pedestrianised zone outside the old tourist information centre opposite Sandown Pier.
Are Sandown Town Council or IW Council waiting for a pedestrian
to be run over before they do something about it, children run
from the Pier to the steps opposite the Pier.
