McDonald’s has confirmed that its long-awaited new Newport drive-thru will open exactly 2 weeks today, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set to mark the arrival of the Isle of Wight’s third McDonald’s restaurant.
The new restaurant at Newport Retail Park, off St George’s Way, will officially open its doors at 11:00 on Wednesday 30th September.
It comes almost 8 years after Island Echo first revealed, in December 2018, that McDonald’s looked set to form part of the redevelopment of the former Newport IW FC ground.
The company’s involvement was subsequently confirmed in 2020, but it has been a lengthy road from the original plans to the restaurant finally welcoming its first customers.
The new McDonald’s sits alongside Aldi, B&M, Costa Coffee, Wren Kitchens and Superdrug, all of which are expected to open before Christmas.
The opening of the McDonald’s drive-thru forms part of a wider expansion for McDonald’s locally, with a further 2 restaurants planned for Lake and Cowes.
Yay! Don’t have to enter the Newport one anymore… Thank god… it’s grim on a weekday… Benefits city!!
It should be closed down it encourages anti-social

I’m a pedant, what can I say? I’d argue that in fact, language is busy devolving. Or rather, its users are.

Proving that sometimes going hungry is a better option than eating.
But some people enjoy the food on offer and it seems that the capitalist mantra of “let the market decide” applies in this case.
Such a shame then that our Council is obsessed with spending our money on its hopeless endeavour to “save the High Street”. The market has decided that high street shopping is beyond its peak, but still public money is being wasted in trying to resurrect it.
The bit that irks me is the playing to demographics. If the powers that be seriously wanted to raise the community there’d be fewer cheap-shit places like that and a few more opportunities to raise the bar in terms of the citizens’ perceived worth.
I fail to understand the hype around these places. The last time I found myself having to go into one of these at a motorway service station, I soon wished I had gone hungry. I stood in a queue, before getting to a digital menu board. Where I had to rub my fingers up & down the board to choose what I wanted. The very same board all the people before me had also been rubbing their hands all over too. With my order placed, I went to the men’s room to wash my hands & found the door handle I had to grab to exit that room was filthy. When my order did arrive, it was mildly warm at best. Chips were pretty much cold. All I can say is, as emergency food on a motorway, it might be ok. As a preferred dining destination, I’d rather go without.
