A fire-damaged building that has stood empty in Sandown for years could soon be given a new lease of life, as local property developer Adam Barker has agreed a deal to purchase the former Parkbury Hotel.
The building has remained vacant since being badly damaged by fire, becoming an eyesore for residents and visitors alike. Subject to planning approval, Adam plans to transform the site into much-needed residential accommodation, bringing the landmark building back into use.
Adam, 33, who bought his first hotel in Freshwater at the age of 21, The Sandpiper’s Hotel, has spent more than a decade restoring neglected properties across the South Coast and the Isle of Wight.
He said:
“I’ve always believed that some of the most rewarding projects are the ones that other people have given up on. The Parkbury Hotel has a lot of history, and it would be a privilege to be the person bringing it back into use.”
The proposed development would see the former hotel carefully converted into high-quality homes, preserving an important local building while helping to meet housing demand. Significant investment would also be made into improving the appearance of the site.
With several further projects already in the pipeline, Adam says he is always looking to build relationships with private investors who want to play a part in bringing neglected buildings back into productive use.
He added:
“The Isle of Wight has so many fantastic buildings with huge potential. Rather than leaving them empty, I’d much rather see them restored and enjoyed again. It’s great for the community, great for the local economy and gives these buildings a future.”
Planning permission is expected to be determined shortly, after which work is expected to begin as soon as possible.
