A violent prisoner who smashed a kettle over the head of a prison officer during a series of assaults at HMP Isle of Wight has been handed additional jail time.
Shay Bailey, 30, of HMP Isle of Wight, admitted 3 counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week.
Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 28th June at HMP Isle of Wight, Bailey was removed from the exercise yard following an altercation with another prisoner.
The 30-year-old was handcuffed and taken inside back to his cell. When inside the cell, Bailey began ‘scoping the officers out’ before the handcuffs were removed.
Court heard that as soon as he was freed from his restraints, Bailey began acting out and started to throw punches, some colliding with the head and face of those restraining him.
Bailey then stood on top of his bed and grabbed a kettle. He then proceeded to swing the kettle, smashing it against a supervising officer’s head so hard that it shattered into pieces.
Court heard how one of the officers hadn’t seen a level of violence like that in his 6 years in the profession.
Bailey, whose earliest release date is April 2028, was sentenced for a knife offence and a grievous bodily harm offence back in June 2025
Defending Bailey, Bridget O’Hagan, told the court that her client was unmedicated at the time of the incident and that he was “hearing voices” on the day in question. She added that although he had a limited recollection of events, Bailey had written letter of apology to those involved.
Bailey disputed that the kettle broke when he struck the officer.
Magistrates, who described the offending as a “nasty set of assaults” sentenced Bailey to 12- weeks in custody, to be served at the end of his existing sentence. He was also ordered to pay a £154 surcharge.
