A 30-year-old man who ‘panicked’ after crashing his BMW through a hedge on the outskirts of Newport back in May, is to be sentenced in the New Year.
Jake Bradley, 30, of Garden Way in Newport, admitting failing to stop at the scene of an accident when he appeared the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier today (Tuesday).
Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 30th May, at around 21:13, police, paramedics and firefighters were called to Staplers Road in Newport following a collision outside Butterfly World.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a BMW 1-Series left the road, smashed through a hedge, rolled and went over a stream, ending up around 100ft into the undergrowth.
Emergency services quickly went to the check the vehicle – described in court as completely destroyed – to see if anyone needed urgent treatment, but the driver, Bradley, had made off.
Ms Miller said that the 30-year-old didn’t return home until the following day and that it wasn’t until the 5th June, having seen a news article about the collision, that he turned himself in.
Defending, Bridget O’Hagan, said that her client had just purchased the car and that the collision was caused when he ‘clipped some edging’. She added that Bradley, who has no previous convictions on his record, panicked in the immediate aftermath and left the scene.
Magistrates opted to adjourn the case to allow Bradley to meet with the Probation Service. Bradley will next appear before the court on 5th January 2027.
