The driver of a BMW has fled the scene of a crash after careering off the road and coming to rest deep in undergrowth on the outskirts of Newport.
It was at around 21:45 tonight (Saturday) that emergency services were called to Whiterails Road, outside Butterfly World, when a silver BMW 1-series left the carriageway.
The car left the road and smashed through shrubbery, distributing debris across the car park, before then going through a hedge and into thick undergrowth.
The vehicle came to rest around 100ft from the carriageway, rolling in the process.
It has been confirmed that the driver failed to stop at the scene and is now being sought by Police.
Whiterails Road was closed for a time but has since reopened in both directions.
Update @ 12:30 – A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has said this afternoon (Sunday) that police were called at 21:13 on Saturday following a single vehicle collision on Staplers Road.
The spokesperson went on to confirm that the driver of the vehicle left before police arrived, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Why do these people run? Do they not realise their mobile phones place them at the scene?
Doesn’t cut any ice, some feeble excuse will be made
and the defence always works in their favour.
It’s a joke, what if he killed someone, he only killed a
tree this time, but what next!
Wonder if this is linked to the three lots of lights /sirens dashing towards Ryde in the past half hour?
Shoildn’t be difficult to trace by vehicle registration
number.
It seems to be the island norm to crash and run.
Did they ever catch the numpty van driver who crashed
into the traffic lights at Lake and caused 3 months of
congestion for motorists.
Anyone fleeing the scene of an accident obvious has
something to hide, if not why run!
Good luck catching the motorist.
DVLA or Garages should have records of the owner of the
vehicle.
Congratulations to the Isle of Wights first astronaut. The BMW came off the road, went through a fence, then a hedge, and then flew, yes flew over palmers brook, another hedge and finally came to rest in a field. Bezos, take note
Should be banned for life fines of many thousands and imprisoned for 6 months. But we know none of that will happen.
There is no law and order in 2026 Britain
Robert Peel is probably turning in his grave.
The country needs rules.
“The vehicle came to rest … rolling in the process.”
Yet more exquisite IE prose.
Well spotted!
They obviously run because they are either drunk, high on drugs, or making a delivery.
Just day to day now. In more interesting news, Is butterfly world no longer open? Looks abandoned in that picture.
