Cowes Sports progressed in the cup while East Cowes Vics and Newport both fought back from behind as the Island’s Wessex League trio went unbeaten this afternoon (Saturday).
YACHTSMEN BOOK EL CLASICOWES CUP SHOWDOWN
Jake Scrimshaw scored his first goal for Cowes Sports as the Yachtsmen booked their place in the 2nd round of the Wessex League Cup with victory at Blandford United.
The result has set up a mouthwatering El Clasicowes in the 2nd round, when Cowes will make the short journey across the Medina to face Vics at the JA Dempsey Community Stadium.
Cowes travelled to the Recreation Ground to face a Blandford side playing their first season in Wessex League Division 1 following promotion from the Dorset Premier League last season.
Former Football League professional Scrimshaw was handed his first start for the Yachtsmen, having made his debut from the bench in Tuesday evening’s draw with Hamble Club at Westwood Park.
The new signing marked his first appearance in the starting XI by opening the scoring and registering his first goal in Cowes colours (0-1).
Charlie Marsek then struck in the 38th minute – his 5th goal of the season – to double the Yachtsmen’s advantage and put Mark Woodhouse’s side firmly in control of the cup tie (0-2).
With a 2-goal cushion to protect, Cowes kept their Division 1 hosts at bay after the break as the Yachtsmen saw out the tie without further addition to the scoreline.
The victory continued an encouraging spell for Cowes following their impressive 1-3 Premier Division win at previously unbeaten Hamworthy Recreation and Tuesday’s draw with Hamble.

VICS COME BACK FROM 2 DOWN AGAINST HIGH-FLYING BADGERS
East Cowes Vics produced a superb comeback from 2 goals down to earn a hard-fought point away to Brockenhurst in the Wessex Premier Division.
The Badgers have enjoyed an excellent start to their campaign and sit 4th in the table.
Brockenhurst took the lead after 10 minutes in spectacular fashion when Toby Bailey spotted George Bridi off his line and found the net from around 50 yards (1-0).
The home side doubled their advantage through Chika in the 40th minute (2-0), but Vics gave themselves a lifeline in the 3rd minute of first-half stoppage time when Jake Wright scored following a corner (2-1).
Vics carried that momentum into the 2nd half and completed their comeback in the 62nd minute. A throw-in caused problems for the Brockenhurst defence before Josh Neale found the net to level the scores (2-2).
The Islanders then pushed for a winner, producing a superb 2nd-half performance and forcing the Badgers onto the defensive during the closing stages.
Brockenhurst had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping the scores level as the hosts survived Vics’ late pressure and the points were shared.
Full Time: Brockenhurst 2-2 East Cowes Vics
East Cowes Vics: G Bridi, Dyer, Snow, West, Yates, Wright, Wall, J Neale, W Bridi, Haward, Hart. Subs: Mooney, Wheeler, Chapman, Weeks, Barnes.
The point leaves Vics 17th in the Wessex Premier Division with 11 points from 10 games.
NASH BAGS BRACE AS PORT TAKE POINT IN HAMPSHIRE
Ji Nash struck twice as Newport came away from Longmeadow with a point from their Wessex Division 1 encounter with Whitchurch United.
Port began brightly, with Nash finding the net to give the Islanders the lead shortly after kick-off (0-1).
Nash came within inches of doubling the advantage in the 6th minute when he struck the post as Newport enjoyed the better of the opening stages.
Whitchurch recovered from their slow start and drew level in the 25th minute, leaving the sides all square going into the interval (1-1).
The Hampshire hosts then turned the game around in the 54th minute, scoring a 2nd to leave Newport chasing the contest for the first time (2-1).
However, Port responded 11 minutes later when Nash struck again in the 65th minute, completing his brace and restoring parity (2-2). The double took his impressive tally to 7 goals in 8 starts for Newport this season.
Neither side was able to find a winner during the remaining 25 minutes, leaving Newport to return across the Solent with a point from their latest Division 1 outing.
