A block of flats has been evacuated after thick black smoke was seen billowing from the buildings top floor this afternoon (Saturday).
The blaze, which appears to have started in the stairwell of the flats was first reported shortly before 13:00, when Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service deployed pumps from Newport, Shanklin and Ryde alongside the aerial ladder platform.
Island Echo understands that the residents of the building located on Garfield Street, just off of High Street have been evacuated.
Fire fighters clad in breathing apparatus are pulling from a nearby hydrant, utilising 2 hose reel jets.
On scene, the midday inferno looks to be under control, with firefighters now working to damp down the building.
Paramedics have arrived on scene, tending to any injured residents.
Currently, Garfield Road remains blocked by emergency services.
Island Echo has contacted Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for a statement.
UPDATE @ 13:50 – Due to smoke continuing to billow out of the solar panelled roof, firefighters are utilising the ALP to gain better access.
