74-year-old Thomas Fowler has died while serving a sentence at HMP Isle of Wight – just 4 months after his brother died while incarcerated at the same prison.
An inquest into the death of the convicted paedophile was opened and adjourned at the Isle of Wight Coroner’s Court this afternoon (Wednesday).
The court heard that Thomas Fowler, who was born in 1952, was an inmate at HMP Isle of Wight and had been due to undergo a planned procedure at St Mary’s Hospital.
However, while at the hospital on 16th September, Fowler suffered a medical episode at around 19:30.
He was pronounced dead at 21:17.
A post-mortem examination has since been carried out, but Fowler’s cause of death remains unascertained. Further investigations are now to be undertaken.
Fowler is understood to be the brother of fellow convicted sex offender Alan Fowler, who also died while serving a lengthy prison sentence at HMP Isle of Wight earlier this year.
Alan, 71, suffered an unwitnessed fall in his cell on the morning of 15th May. CPR was commenced before he was taken across the road to St Mary’s Hospital, where further resuscitation attempts were made. He was pronounced dead shortly before 14:00.
A post-mortem examination carried out following Alan’s death also recorded his cause of death as unascertained, with further tests ordered, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Thomas Fowler was jailed for 18 years for 18 counts of indecent assaults against 3 girls. His brother had been jailed for 28 years.
