A 22-year-old man from Ryde went to dangerous lengths to evade police after officers spotted him driving without a seatbelt, ultimately crashing into another vehicle.
Kieran Tunney, 22, of Green Street, admitted dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving without a seatbelt when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
Prosecutor Liz Miller told the court that on 11th August, at around 18:50 in Sandown, police noticed the driver of a red Vauxhall Corsa didn’t have his seatbelt on.
Lights and sirens were activated as police attempted to follow and stop Tunney.
Tunney then took off at speed, travelling at 60mph in a 30mph zone, along Avenue Road and St John’s Crescent – where he didn’t give way at the Carter Street junction. Tunney then proceeded onto Grove Road and then Broadway, where he went through a red light at The Heights Leisure Centre.
The vehicle mounted the pavement on The Fairway in an attempt to evade police before heading along Golf Links Road and Longwood Lane, where Tunney crashed into a Land Rover.
Court heard how Tunney had his licence revoked back in January and is currently under the watchful eye of the probation service.
The case was adjourned until 22nd December, when a probation report will be used to help magistrates decide their sentence.
