A search and rescue operation is underway off the southern coast of the Isle of Wight this morning (Monday) amid fears that an aircraft has crashed into the sea.
It was at around 09:15 that a member of the public spotted what they describe as a ‘small plane or military drone’ diving straight down over the edge of a cliff. The aircraft was not seen to come up again, sparking fears of a crash.
Another witness has described seeing a plane – potentially a Dassault Falcon jet – flying at around 400ft in the vicinity of St Catherine’s Point.
HM Coastguard has now deployed Coastguard Rescue 375 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent to conduct an aerial sweep along the coast, between Blackgang and St Catherine’ Point.
Meanwhile, Freshwater Independent Lifeboat has launched its inshore lifeboat and is conducting a shoreline search.
UPDATE @ 11:06 – Coastguard Rescue 375 has now stood down from the search, have conducted a thorough aerial sweep of the Blackgang and Undercliff area.
Fresh information suggests a Dassault Falcon jet, operated by the Royal Air Force, was undertaking operations in the area and at low level, but successfully returned to Bournemouth Airport.
HM Coastguard has been contacted for a statement.
