ISLE OF WIGHT DIVISION 1
Binstead & COB 0-0 Sandown & Lake
Binstead & COB picked up their first point of the season in the only Division 1 fixture played on Saturday, holding Sandown & Lake to a goalless draw.
Before kick-off, Sandown players laid a wreath in memory of Binstead’s Darren Powell, who suffered a cardiac arrest during the club’s opening league fixture on 5th September and died later that month.
In a hard-fought encounter, Binstead struggled to reproduce their performance against Hart United the previous weekend and rarely troubled the visiting goalkeeper. At the other end, Kirk Austin made 2 outstanding saves to keep Sandown at bay, while Craig Mason was named Man of the Match.
Binstead remain 9th with 1 point from their only completed league fixture, while Sandown & Lake are 7th with 4 points from 5 games.
Brading Town P-P Whitecroft & Barton Sports
The Division 1 clash at Vicarage Lane was postponed after sewage and water reportedly flooded the changing rooms.
Brading Town issued the following statement:
“Game off. Massive apologies to all involved with this match but sadly Vicarage Lane has ‘no changing rooms available’ due to flooding of sewage/water. Sorry for the inconvenience caused by this.”
However, Whitecroft & Barton manager Joe Rayner questioned the explanation, alleging that Brading were short of players.
Rayner said:
“People wonder why the island league is dying, then you get teams calling games off because of their changing rooms when they’ve really just got a few players missing. What an absolute sh*t show!”
The postponement denied 3rd-placed Whitecroft & Barton the chance to close the 5-point gap on leaders West Wight, who have played 1 game more.
West Wight lead Division 1 with 13 points from 5 games, 3 ahead of Shanklin, who have a game in hand.
