Brothers Ayrton and Finley Manser-Grundy produced impressive performances at Sunday’s Wessex League cyclo-cross event, overcoming challenging conditions to secure excellent finishes.
5-year-old Ayrton was making his cyclo-cross debut in the Under 8 category, competing against a large field of riders for the first time.
Despite his lack of racing experience, the youngster showed remarkable confidence as he negotiated a demanding course featuring technical corners and challenging climbs.
Ayrton remained on his bike throughout the race, successfully tackling every obstacle before crossing the finish line in a creditable 11th place. The youngster finished with a huge smile, having thoroughly enjoyed his first taste of competitive cyclo-cross racing.
Older brother Finley, who recently celebrated his 8th birthday, faced stiff competition in an Under 10 field featuring more than 40 riders.
After a relatively slow start, Finley battled his way through the field to join the leading group, regularly exchanging positions with the top 3 competitors as he challenged for a podium finish.
However, his hopes of a top-3 placing suffered a setback when another rider collided with the rear of his bike, sending him crashing to the ground and bending his rear derailleur.
Despite the fall and damage to his gears, Finley refused to surrender. He remounted his bike and fought his way back through the field, eventually crossing the line in an outstanding 4th place.
Although disappointed to miss out on a podium finish, Finley could take considerable encouragement from his determination and resilience in overcoming a potentially race-ending incident.
Both brothers will now look forward to building on their performances in the next round of the Wessex League series.
