A depleted Sandown & Shanklin side twice fought back to level the scores against Farnham before eventually falling to a 47-14 defeat on the road on Saturday (10th October).
The Hurricanes travelled to Farnham with a much-changed squad following a string of injuries, with further last-minute alterations adding to their selection difficulties.
However, the disruption did little to unsettle the visitors, who made an impressive start and took an early lead through scrum-half Tom Marriott.
After a series of patient phases from the forwards, Marriott spotted a gap in the Farnham defence and darted through beneath the posts, allowing fly-half Tommy Scourfield to add a straightforward conversion.
The hosts responded almost immediately to level at 7-7 before producing a superb length-of-the-field try, which will surely be among their contenders for try of the season, to move 14-7 ahead.
Sandown were far from finished, though, and responded with some powerful forward play of their own.
Strong carries from Rob Newton and Wight Knuckle Man of the Match Matt Misslebach laid the foundations for Zak Chiverton, who cut a superb line against the grain to crash over.
Scourfield was again successful from the tee, bringing the Hurricanes level at 14-14.
With momentum seemingly shifting in Sandown’s favour, Farnham struck against the run of play with another impressive long-range effort to regain the advantage.
The home side then enjoyed a sustained period of pressure, repeatedly threatening the Sandown try line as they worked their way deep into the visitors’ 22.
However, the Hurricanes produced a determined defensive stand, with Sam Thomas leading by example through a series of crucial tackles.
Their efforts ensured Farnham were unable to extend their advantage before the break, leaving Sandown firmly in contention.
Half-time: Farnham 19-14 Sandown & Shanklin
With just 5 points separating the sides, the second half began as a tense affair, although it was Farnham who made the breakthrough to increase their lead.
Sandown continued to battle and came agonisingly close to responding when captain Hugo Jolliffe was stopped just short of the line following a tap penalty from 5 metres out.
It proved to be a significant opportunity for the visitors, who were finding themselves increasingly stretched as the physical demands of the contest began to take their toll.
With fatigue setting in, Sandown struggled to maintain the accuracy that had served them so well in the opening period.
Farnham were quick to capitalise, punishing loose possession and turning turnovers into further scores as the game slipped away from the Hurricanes.
Despite their continued efforts, Sandown were unable to add to their first-half tally, with the hosts eventually running out 47-14 winners.
The final scoreline was harsh on a Hurricanes side who had matched their opponents for much of the opening half and demonstrated considerable resilience despite their injury problems.
