A scheme to convert a prominent empty building in Ryde into a ‘high-quality’ new Isle of Wight hotel has won the qualified backing of local councillors.
Ryde Town Council (RTC) conditionally supports Dr Malik’s proposal to turn the former Terminus Hotel at 70 and 70A St Johns Road in Ryde into visitor accommodation with ten bedrooms, a lounge and dining area.
Up for auction in 2025, the site, which has fallen into disrepair, was previously transformed into 2 large maisonettes and once home to a gym, according to Clive Emson.
RTC said it would like to put on record that the benefits of bringing the property back into life would outweigh concerns previously raised by the Environment Agency (EA).
The EA told planners that without an adequate flood risk assessment (FRA), it objects to the application. It highlighted that the submitted FRA ‘fails’ to take the impacts of climate change into account.
RTC said it has no objection to the proposal, subject to appropriate payment being made to the Solent Special Protection Area, which is designated for wintering birds, and adequate provision for waste storage and management.
The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on application 26/00952/FUL ended on 2nd October and a decision by the council is due on 20th October.
