Some fine racing ensued at Itchen Junior Regatta last Saturday (3rd October), with Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club represented by 19 young athletes, who went on to gain 8 wins, some 9x 2nd places and an array of 3rd places, securing the Victor Ludorum for only the second time in the club’s history.
Fresh from success at the South Coast Championships and The Scullers Head, SSRC saw 25 crews facing stiff competition from across the Hants and Dorset region.
Club Captain Garry Walters was once again delighted with the results and applauded the next generation of young athletes.
‘Many of the Shanklin athletes have already had regional, National and International recognition this year, so it was particularly encouraging to see several racing for the first time and already achieving wins and podium positions. A special mention to Sam Meadowcroft and James Travers for their win in the J16 2x and the Girls J14 4x of Emily Mumbersum, Thea Laidler Jones, Taylor Speedie and Elsie Flower with Esme Walters Coxing, who won by very clear margins.’
