Island Echo always welcomes letters to the editor, which may of course not reflect the views of the publication and its staff.
This letter is in response to the RSPCA urging Islanders to reduce their meat consumption by 3% in an effort to spare 1billion land animals from lower-welfare farming by 2050.
Letter to the editor – 13th October 2026
“I am a vegetarian and all for animal welfare, but I find your recent post on the RSPCA requesting Island residents reduce their consumption of animal products by 3% a bit of a cheek.“How about the RSPCA increase their responses to calls on animal welfare concerns on the island by 3%? That would be a huge improvement!“It is well known in the horse community on the island how difficult it is to get the RSPCA to respond to calls concerning horses in distress. Do they even have an inspector based on the island?“I have personally in the past had to make numerous calls after my emails with pictures of horses in terrible condition were repeatedly ignored.“So, for the RSPCA to be telling us to improve animal welfare while we repeatedly get ignored on the same subject is, frankly, a bit rich!”
