18-year-old Max O’Neill, who left a pensioner with serious head injuries in a violent attack, has been sentenced for a string of offences, including robbery, a separate serious assault and attempting to kill a badger.
O’Neill was just 17 when he attacked the 72-year-old man at Salters Park, in the Haylands area of Ryde, on 12th March last year.
As previously reported by Island Echo, police and paramedics were called to the park, at the bottom of Salters Road, following reports that a verbal altercation had escalated into a physical assault. At the time, it was said that the elderly victim had suffered a fractured jaw and a bleed on the brain.
O’Neill, previously of Meadowbrook in Binstead, fled the scene but was later arrested, going on to be initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. However, at Portsmouth Crown Court on 14th July this year, he pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of causing grievous bodily harm without intent.
Earlier this month, on 9th October, Max O’Neill was sentenced to 8 months in a young offender institution for the attack.
The assault on the pensioner was just 1 of several serious offences for which O’Neill was sentenced that day…
The teenager also received a 16-month custodial sentence for a robbery committed on 8th September 2025, during which he stole £25 in cash and a rucksack. The robbery took place just 6 months after the attack on the pensioner.
The teenager also admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent in a separate assault that took place on Players Beach in Binstead on 21st July 2024, when O’Neill was just 16 years old. He was sentenced to 5 months in custody for that offence, with the sentence ordered to run concurrently.
Despite the length of sentence he received, O’Neill was released from custody just 11 days ago after serving significant time on remand.

In another case, O’Neill received a 10-month concurrent custodial sentence in connection with a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour towards a woman with whom he had been in an intimate relationship.
His violent offending also extends to animals, with the 18-year-old appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court today (Wednesday) for attempting to kill a badger. The offence took place on 29th March 2025, just 17 days after the attack on the 72-year-old man in Ryde.
O’Neill admitted wilfully attempting to kill the protected animal, contrary to the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, and received a 4-month youth offender’s sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was also banned from having custody of a dog for 3 years.
