A Sandown care home is celebrating after being rated ‘Good’ in all 5 areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with inspectors praising its dedicated staff, compassionate care and strong leadership.
Magnolia House, located on Broadway in Sandown, received the positive assessment in a report published on Monday (19th October), following an inspection which examined the safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership of the home.
The care home, which had 31 residents at the time of the assessment, was rated ‘Good’ overall and in each of the 5 individual categories.
Inspectors found that residents received safe, personalised care from staff who understood their individual needs, preferences and routines.
The CQC said staffing levels were regularly reviewed and that residents, relatives and employees had spoken positively about recent increases in staff numbers.
One resident described the care they received, saying:
“First class, lovely carers and the carers are very dedicated.”
Another told inspectors:
“It is very good here, they are very helpful, very nice people, and it’s a pleasure to be here.”
Relatives were equally complimentary, with one explaining they felt comfortable knowing their loved one was being properly looked after and enjoying life at the home.
In the ‘Safe’ category, inspectors found that staff understood how to recognise and report safeguarding concerns, while detailed risk assessments were in place to protect residents from avoidable harm.
Medication was found to be safely managed, with appropriate systems for storage, administration and monitoring.
The home was also rated ‘Good’ for effectiveness, with inspectors highlighting support for residents’ nutrition, hydration, healthcare and general wellbeing.
The CQC found that residents were encouraged to maintain their independence, with staff helping people develop their mobility and confidence.
Relatives reported improvements in residents’ physical and mental wellbeing after moving into the home, including better mobility, increased confidence and reduced confusion.
Inspectors also praised the home’s approach to personalised care, finding that residents were involved in decisions about their daily lives, including when they wanted to get up and how they preferred to receive support.
The ‘Responsive’ assessment found that staff understood residents’ individual preferences, while families were kept informed about changes to their loved ones’ care.
The home’s management team was described as visible, approachable and committed to delivering high-quality care, contributing to its ‘Good’ rating for leadership.
However, inspectors did identify some areas requiring further attention.
Parts of the building needed refurbishment, with concerns raised about garden walkways, seating and signage for people living with dementia or visual and mobility difficulties.
The CQC also highlighted infection control concerns, including worn flooring in the dining room and a stained commode which required replacing.
Management acknowledged the issues, with improvement plans already in place and an immediate replacement agreed for the commode.
Despite these findings, inspectors concluded that the home was well managed, with effective systems for monitoring care standards and addressing areas requiring improvement.
The home’s manager has expressed delight at the results, thanking staff for their commitment to residents.
In a statement, the manager has said:
“As Manager of Magnolia House, I would like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to every member of our amazing team. Your commitment, teamwork and dedication make a real difference to the lives of our residents every single day.
“Thank you also to our wonderful residents and their families for your trust, support and for being part of the Magnolia House family. This achievement belongs to all of us.
“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved together, but we know that providing excellent care is an ongoing commitment. We will continue to learn, improve and strive to make Magnolia House a special place to live and work.”
