Competitors will be challenged to lay and secure a 10m stretch of hedge when the Wight Nature Fund Autumn Hedgelaying Competition returns to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet next month.
The popular rural competition will take place on 14th November, with teams and individuals invited to showcase their skills in the traditional countryside craft.
Organised by local charity Wight Nature Fund for the 2nd year, the event follows a successful inaugural competition in 2025, which attracted several teams and hundreds of spectators who enjoyed the late autumn sunshine.
Competitors will be tasked with laying and securing a 10-metre section of hedge within a set time limit, putting their skills and techniques to the test.
There will be 3 categories – Open, Novice and Team – alongside additional trophies for the Best Hedge laid using hand tools only and the Best Stakes and Binding used in a hedge.
Last year’s competition saw Tom Murphy crowned winner of the Open Class, while Andy Toms took home the Novice Trophy.
The event is free to enter and free to watch, with spectators welcome at Havenstreet Station from 10:00.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy demonstrations of traditional crafts and activities, while the railway’s café will be open for food and refreshments throughout the event.
Thomas Cowley, Trustee of Wight Nature Fund, has said:
“The benefits of hedgelaying are numerous and it complements the Isle of Wight’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.
“It is a fantastic day out, for both competitors and spectators who are interested in learning more about this vital rural craft!”
Free parking will be available at Havenstreet Station, which is also now served by Southern Vectis buses, giving visitors the option of travelling to the event by public transport.
Entries are now open, with competitors having until 13th November to register.
Entry forms can be found on the Wight Nature Fund website or through the charity’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
