A pair of new homes will be created behind a shop in the heart of Ryde town.
Mr M Sen’s planning and listed building consent applications to reduce the retail area at 68 Union Street in Ryde and install a couple of residential units to the rear of the 19th century property have been approved by planners.
Each dwelling will have a kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom.
A submitted Planning Statement said:
“The creation of the two residential units are so located so as to not increase travel by car and it offers alternative means of commuting with transport services adjacent.
A council decision report said the proposed conversion to residential use would not impact on the setting of the listed building or character of the Ryde Conservation Area.
“A basement would still be available for storage and a utility area is to be created for the use of the retail unit”
“As a result, the reduced size of the retail unit would not impact on its viability or have an impact on the overall vitality of the town centre.”
68 Union Street is home to Fantastic Stores, and was previously an art gallery.
Three conditions were including in the consent to ensure works are in keeping with the building’s special architectural and historic interest as well as for planning policy and legal compliance.
