Isle of Wight musician Fugo Kid has released his latest single HEADGEAR, marking a new chapter in his music career after performing on the Main Stage at this year’s Isle of Wight Festival.
The rising artist, whose real name is Jack Portuito, has unveiled the new track following his move away from the Isle of Wight to begin university studies in September.
Available to stream now, HEADGEAR draws inspiration from hip-hop heavyweights J. Cole and Wu-Tang Clan, using comedy and satire to explore the idea of responding to criticism.
The song was recorded in Fugo Kid’s home studio, with the young musician playing every instrument and producing the entire track himself.
Influenced by artists including Nas and Kofi Stone, Fugo Kid has developed a sound inspired by old-school hip-hop instrumentals, reimagined with a modern twist.
The release marks his first new music since taking to the Main Stage at the Isle of Wight Festival in June, having secured his place at the event by winning the Wight Noize competition.
His performance at Seaclose Park saw him take to the same stage that later welcomed major acts including The Cure and The Last Dinner Party.
Speaking about his latest release and the next stage of his career, Fugo Kid has said:
“I recorded this song at the start of the year and after having it sit in the archives, I’m finally ready to release it.
“It’s a weird feeling but an exciting one taking a step off the Island, but I’m really excited to kickstart the new chapter.”
Having started university in September, Jack is continuing to write and produce music alongside his studies.
HEADGEAR is available to stream now.
