Those travelling inside a vehicle heading for West Wight are believed to have narrowly escaped injury after a large tree came crashing down across Calbourne Road, narrowly missing their vehicle.
The dramatic incident occurred just up from The Waverley pub, as the vehicle was travelling in a westerly direction towards West Wight.
It is understood that the tree suddenly came down across the carriageway, leaving the vehicle caught up in the incident and blocking the road in both directions.
The size of the fallen tree meant that the road was completely obstructed, with a large trunk stretching across the carriageway and branches and debris scattered across the tarmac.
Police and firefighters attended the scene, with emergency services working around the fallen tree and stricken vehicle.
Fortunately, it is believed that those travelling in the car managed to escape injury, despite the extremely close call.
Island Roads closed Calbourne Road to traffic while the obstruction was dealt with and arrangements were made to recover the vehicle.
The incident caused disruption to Southern Vectis bus services, with 2 buses operating the Route 7 service towards Alum Bay becoming stranded on opposite sides of the fallen tree.
The incident comes as the Isle of Wight continues to be battered by storm Boelo, with strong winds and persistent heavy rainfall affecting roads across the Island.
The combination of saturated ground and gusty conditions has raised concerns about the risk of further trees and branches falling onto roads.
Calbourne Road has since reopened in both directions following the clearance of the obstruction and recovery operation.
