Subscriptions for Isle of Wight garden waste collection could be hiked by almost 20%, a new report from the strategic director of community services has revealed.
A new report from Simon Moon, County Hall’s strategic director of community services, presents a proposal to review the discretionary charges which currently sit at £102 annually.
He proposes putting them up £18 to £120 per year.
It comes as the Isle of Wight Council continues to grapple with increasing service demand and significant financial challenges.
Mr Moon’s paper says the policy could raise £178,200 over 3 financial years from 2027/28.
The report says:
“Based on current modelling, a prudent additional income assumption of £59,400 per annum has been identified at a £120 subscription charge and ten per cent customer attrition.
“However, the modelling also identifies significantly greater upside potential, with additional income opportunities ranging from approximately £128,700 at £115 to £227,700 at £125 if customer retention remains stronger than forecast.
“The principal risk remains customer attrition and affordability impacts.”
Mr Moon’s report says there would not be reduced service provision, with existing collection frequency and service standards maintained.
It adds that further benchmarking, demand analysis, equality considerations and communications planning are required before any final charging decision is made.
The garden waste subscription review forms part of a series of savings, efficiency, cost avoidance and income generation proposals presented in the document.
Council officers have recommended the environment and community protection committee (ECPC) endorse the plans for referral to the policy, finance and resources committee as part of the council’s budget setting process.
ECPC councillors will consider Mr Moon’s report at a County Hall meeting on 29th October from 17:00.

IOW council fail to collect millions of pounds every year. So the financial crisis is down to there inept finance department and the highly paid boss failing in his duty.
Isn’t it a funny run island, the numpties already charge one of the most expensive green waste charges in the country not to mention one of the most expensive council taxes in the country
YET THEY WANT TO CHARGE MORE!
But they don’t mind allowing numpties to EVADE paying parking charges by parking inside a pedestrianised zone outside the old tourist information centre opposite Sandown Pier.
You cannot make this sh*t up.
Time for a person like Lord Sir Sadiq Khan running the island
he would have such vehicles TOWED AWAY!
This lot are clueless.
Does that factor in all the people, myself included, who will simply not renew.
This year my garden waste hasn’t been collected once despite me paying for it and informing council each time there was a missed collection… so I’ve already paid quite a lot for nothing and will not be renewing next year. No point if I have then to pay for private gardener to deal with it anyway.
