A Ryde man who assaulted a Police officer who was trying to stop him from self-harming said he “regrets everything he did”.
42-year-old Nigel Pym appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Friday), where he pleaded guilty to assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty.
Prosecutor Liz Miller, told the court that on 18th September, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary attended Pym’s home on High Street, Ryde, due to an unrelated matter. The 42-year-old was subsequently arrested and put into the back of a police van.
Once inside, Pym began hitting his head on the wall of the holding cage, prompting an officer to open the door and restrain him.
The officer sat opposite Pym, placing his hand on the defendant’s shoulder in an attempt to stop him from hurting himself further. It was here that Pym launched his attack, kicking the officer in the genitals.
The court heard that at the time of the offence, Pym said “police don’t care about me” and was heard to say “I don’t give a f*ck” when being cautioned. Following the kick, Pym was re-arrested for assaulting a police officer.
Pym apologised to the officer, court heard.
Defending, Eva Ford, said her client has poor mental health and that he had apologised directly after the event.
Addressing the court himself, Pym said:
“I will never ever do it again, I regret everything I did and I wish I could take it back.”
Due to his limited means, the magistratres fined Pym £200.
