Schoolchildren from across the Isle of Wight are being invited to discover the wide range of careers available in the maritime industry at a special event in Cowes.
The Royal Yacht Squadron Foundation Maritime Careers Fair will take place at the Castle on The Parade in Cowes on Thursday 1st October, between 10:00 and 16:00.
Schools have been encouraged to send as many pupils as possible throughout the day, with younger children given the chance to gain ideas and inspiration and older students able to receive more specific careers advice.
A broad range of organisations will showcase the diversity of opportunities available within the maritime sector, including the Royal Navy, BAE, boatbuilders, engineers, cruise ship and ferry operators, photographers and training establishments.
Young people will also have the opportunity to explore a variety of workboats and yachts in the Royal Yacht Squadron Haven, as well as HMS Medusa.
This year’s event will include advice on interview skills and one-to-one guidance on students’ individual work styles and aptitudes, alongside a prize competition.
James Stevens, Chairman of the Royal Yacht Squadron Foundation, has said:
“We know there are many young Islanders who are simply unaware of the maritime careers that are available to them, and what their earnings might be.

The Foundation was established in 2015 to mark the bicentenary of the Royal Yacht Squadron, with the aim of helping young Islanders develop the skills and confidence needed to pursue maritime careers.
Since then, more than £500,000 in grants, funded entirely by Royal Yacht Squadron members, has been awarded to support careers ranging from marine engineering to superyacht crew positions.
Working alongside schools, colleges, local authorities, training providers and employers, the Foundation provides funding to young people aged between 15 and 29.
Grants are usually worth between £250 and £3,000, although larger awards can be made, and can help towards training costs, apprenticeships, equipment, travel and essential qualifications.
