West Wight led the way as 6 Island sides progressed in the Hampshire Saturday Trophy and Vase on Saturday (7th November).
West Wight booked their place in the next round of the Trophy with a workmanlike win over Hampshire Premier League opponents Whiteley Wanderers, thanks to a Louie Thomas double and a fine individual effort from Jude Millar.
The home side had an early opportunity in the 15th minute when Thomas failed to convert a cross into the middle of the penalty area. However, the striker made amends in the 26th minute, pouncing on a mix-up in the Whiteley defence to put West Wight ahead (1–0).
Thomas continued to trouble the visitors’ defence and saw another effort saved by the Whiteley keeper. At the other end, Whiteley had appeals for a penalty waved away in the 42nd minute after Eleye went down under a challenge inside the area.
Half Time: West Wight 1–0 Whiteley Wanderers
Whiteley came out strongly after the interval and put the home defence under considerable pressure. The visitors went close in the 50th minute when an effort flew narrowly past the post, but West Wight weathered the early second-half pressure.
In the 57th minute, Millar intercepted a goal kick before finding the net from an acute angle to double the home side’s advantage (2–0).
Millar threatened again in the 66th minute, producing a strong run before firing straight at the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Thomas struck from outside the penalty area, with the Whiteley keeper unable to hold his effort as West Wight extended their lead to 3–0.
The visitors refused to give up, and West Wight goalkeeper Ben Gearing was called upon to make an excellent one-handed save from Aaron Kirby in the 82nd minute.
Whiteley’s task became even harder in the 85th minute when Jack Chambers was dismissed for a second yellow card following dissent.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Whiteley pulled a goal back in the 88th minute. Gearing parried an initial shot, but Akeem reacted quickest to poke the loose ball into the net (3–1).
West Wight nearly restored their 3-goal advantage in the closing moments through an Ashley Brett header, only for Whiteley goalkeeper Jack Vickery to stop a fourth goal for the home side.
Full Time: West Wight 3–1 Whiteley Wanderers
