Leading conservationist and adventurer Sacha Dench will visit Ryde School this month to help launch a new Island-wide climate education initiative.
Sacha, known as the ‘Human Swan’ for her groundbreaking aerial expeditions tracking migratory species across continents, will give a public talk at Ryde School on Thursday 24th September.
Drawing on her global expeditions, she will discuss how individuals, businesses and communities can play a part in building a more sustainable future.
The event will mark the launch of the Island Climate Education Hub, a new initiative bringing together schools, educators, community groups and local leaders across the Isle of Wight.
It aims to strengthen climate and sustainability education, encourage responses to climate change and create stronger links between existing environmental activity across the Island.
Dr Andrew Lee, founder of the Island Climate Education Hub and Honorary Lecturer at UCL’s Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education, has said:
“Climate change presents particular challenges for coastal and island communities.
“The Hub is about connecting schools, educators and the wider community, sharing practical responses and giving young people the knowledge and agency to help shape a more sustainable future.
Article continues below this advertisement “This event with Sacha is our starting point rather than a one-off occasion. We expect a wider programme of activities, talks, school engagement and collaborative events to develop during the academic year.”
Sacha’s visit will also include engagement with young people and educators, exploring how climate and sustainability issues can be made relevant, constructive and empowering for students.
Organisers say the Hub will seek to connect schools and other organisations with educators and networks on the mainland, allowing ideas, expertise and opportunities to be shared rather than groups working in isolation.
Tickets for the launch event are free, although donations are welcomed.
A drinks reception with light refreshments is also planned at Ryde School following Sacha’s talk, subject to final confirmation.
