Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club travelled to Southsea for the largest coastal regatta of the year last weekend, racing against a pair of associations.
Shanklin fielded a total of 8 crews in this regatta, with some races having up to 24 crews entered in each event.
The highlight of the day was a win for Lottie Pettitt in Ladies Novice Sculls, the club’s fourth of the season.
Lottie, who won her heat by 5 lengths, found her main opposition in the final coming from Herne Bay who were close the entire course, however, Lottie put in a big surge 200m from the finish line, to win by two lengths.
Isaac King and Fin Diffey teamed up in the Men’s Junior Pairs events, winning their heat easily to qualify for the final.
In the final, they matched rivals, Poole, down to the buoys, despite a little difficulty at the buoy turn, they came back strong, closing the gap every stroke. This, unfortunately, wasn’t enough, and they had to settle for second place.
Anna Scott and Esme Walters raced in the Ladies Senior Pairs event, where they were in the leading pack for the majority of the race. An incident at the buoy turn saw the race being re-run and again the crew found themselves in the leading pack.
With local club Itchen Imperial and Kent club Herne Bay leading out the field, they Shanklin crew finished third out of a tough field of ten.
The Ladies 4 of Lottie Pettitt, Theodora Travers, Chloe Walker, Evie Crew, and Jane Denby-Roach (cox), finished in fifth spot in the Ladies Junior fours and third in the Junior Senior ladies race.
The club also had two of it’s Juniors, Digby Ridgewell and Josh Batchelor, racing at Reading Town regatta, where Josh secured two wins in the J14 boys and the J15 band 2 races, with Digby earning a second place finish in the J15 band 1 event.
