A new memoir with prominent links to the Isle of Wight explores love, heartbreak, regret and the difficult process of rebuilding a life after profound change during a turbulent 2-year period in its author’s life.
The Man Behind the Mask, written under the pen name Chad Power, is a personal account exploring love, heartbreak, loss, relationships, mistakes and the process of trying to understand the person the author had become.
The Isle of Wight features prominently in the memoir, with Chad spending around 18 months travelling back and forth to the Island during the period covered by the book.
During that time, he explored the Island, built a life here and created memories connected to a relationship which, at the time, he believed would last.
However, when that relationship ended, the Island became the backdrop to a very different chapter in his life as he attempted to understand what had happened, the mistakes he had made, what he had lost and who he was beneath the identity he had built for himself.
Chad explains:
“The Island became a huge part of that journey. I spent eighteen months travelling back and forth, exploring the Island, building a life there and creating memories that at the time felt like they would last forever.

At the heart of The Man Behind the Mask is a focus on honesty and self-reflection, with the author deliberately avoiding presenting a polished version of events.
Instead, the memoir confronts uncomfortable experiences, difficult relationships, emotional pain and the consequences of choices made along the way.
It also examines what comes afterwards – learning from the past, accepting what cannot be changed and attempting to rebuild an identity beyond the person someone once believed they were supposed to be.
Chad says the book is ultimately about trying to understand himself and the person he had become, with the story taking a candid and unfiltered approach to a period of significant change.
