Historic buildings will throw open their doors and re-enactors will bring the past to life when Newport Heritage Day returns for its third year on Saturday (12th September).
The free event will take place this coming Saturday (12th September), giving Islanders and visitors the chance to discover more about the people, places and stories that have shaped the Isle of Wight’s county town.
A variety of historic buildings will be open to explore, alongside local displays, community activities and historical re-enactors across Newport.
Local heritage organisations will come together at Newport Minster, where visitors will be able to learn more about the history on their doorstep and meet groups working to preserve the Island’s past.
Family trails and guided tours will also take place, offering the opportunity to discover more about the Minster and its history.
Elsewhere in the town, Albany Lodge, Independent Arts and The Guildhall Museum of Island History will be open to visitors free of charge.
The Bus Museum will also take over 64 High Street for the occasion.
Shops across Newport will get involved too, with special window displays exploring the history of the buildings they occupy.

“Newport Heritage Day is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to step inside local buildings, uncover hidden stories and celebrate the history that surrounds us every day.

Newport Heritage Day forms part of Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, which runs from 11th September until 20th September. Events taking place as part of Heritage Open Days are free to explore and are organised by volunteers, community groups and heritage organisations across the country.
Newport Heritage Day itself is free to attend and open to everyone.
