A prominent building in Ryde that has stood empty for years could be brought back into use as a new 10-bedroom hotel under plans submitted to the Isle of Wight Council.
Dr Malik is seeking planning permission to convert the former Terminus Hotel at 70 and 70A St Johns Road, which is said to have fallen into a poor state of repair.
The building went up for auction in 2025 and had previously been converted into 2 large maisonettes, as well as once being home to a gym, according to auctioneer Clive Emson.
Under the latest proposals, the property would be converted to provide short-stay visitor accommodation, alongside on-site management facilities.
The proposed hotel would feature 10 bedrooms as well as a guest lounge and dining area.
Holbrook Architectural Services, acting on behalf of Dr Malik, says the development would secure the future of the building through carefully considered alterations designed to improve its appearance.
A Design and Access Statement submitted as part of the application states:
“The scheme makes efficient use of an existing building, supports tourism, encourages sustainable transport and delivers a significant visual improvement to this important corner site.
“A Noise Impact Assessment has also been undertaken which concludes that the proposed hotel use is suitable for the site, subject to standard acoustic mitigation measures which can readily be incorporated into the development.”
The architectural designer says the proposals would not result in any significant additional overlooking, overshadowing or loss of privacy compared with the existing situation.
Other benefits highlighted in the planning documents include secure cycle storage and the restoration of architectural features that have previously been lost.
The application is currently out for public consultation, with Islanders able to submit comments until 2nd October.
A decision on planning application 26/00952/FUL is currently scheduled to be made by the Isle of Wight Council on 20th October.
