More than 200 fly-tipping incidents were recorded by the Isle of Wight Council in the first 3 months of this year – over a dozen more than in the last months of 2025.
A total of 203 cases were documented between January and March, up from 188 during the end of 2025, with the overwhelming majority of cases continuing to occur on highways and very few on footpaths or bridleways.
These are the findings of an Isle of Wight Council environment and community protection committee report which says fly-tipping pressures remained ‘persistent’ through the winter.
The distribution of incidents reinforces the ‘well-established pattern’ of fly-tipping being concentrated in ‘highly accessible’ and ‘visible’ areas – particularly where vehicles can stop briefly without challenge, the paper says.
Household waste remained dominant, with over half of all incidents categorised as mixed or other household waste and black bag rubbish also forming a large proportion.
The committee report says:
“Construction and demolition waste continued to appear at lower but consistent levels, alongside vehicle parts and white goods, while no incidents involving animal carcasses, asbestos or clinical waste were recorded.
“This profile indicates that fly tipping during January to March was driven primarily by domestic disposal behaviours, supplemented by intermittent small scale trade waste, rather than organised hazardous dumping.
Article continues below this advertisement “Most incidents involved small to medium volumes, with transit vans and small vans comprising the largest share, followed by car boot sized loads and single items.”
To tackle the issue, the council has pointed to long-term behaviour change, accessible and responsive waste services, targeted hotspot management and visible enforcement, rather than short-term or seasonal interventions.
it’s a combination of laziness and the council tips making it more and more difficult to take waste there.
This can be avoided by dropping charges to tip at the local refuse site, making it free as it always used to be.
I wish the Council were concerned about speeding on the

Next there will be an article on flower arranging and no doubt you will shoehorn a moan about the ferries/lack of a fixed link into it. I seriously think you need professional help. I just don’t get it. The tip is so well organised, easy to book with blenty of time slots – at least that’s how I’ve always found it to be – so why would anyone want / need to dump their rubbish anywhere else. maybe they are simletons ?.
Relax the rules at linbottom tip and you might find that these problems decrease.
Its a bloddy pain in the arse.
Only 1 visit a day, can’t book quickly even if there would have been slots available, turn up too early or too late you get turned away…. not everyones lives run like clockwork.
You could pack your car up for a tip run and find a medical emergency becomes priority or a mechanical brakdown or the dog is sick or the kids spill something nasty or nan has a fall. Then your stuck with a car full of rotting rubbish or garden waste with bugs crawling out of it.
Desperate people do desperate things when faced with a system that isn’t flexible.
Someone might be moving house and faced wirh multiple trips that cant be achieved. Or facing eviction and need to dump stuff quicly but can’t with the booking system.
I know some people love it now with a booking system and I’m sure it does suit many who’s only activity and highlight for the day is a trip to the tip. But for many unlucky people, chaos and poverty come hand in hand.
Stop charging at the dump and treat rubbish as rubbish not a money making scam .!!!

imagine more people would use them.
