Would you like to join your local Guide Dogs Isle of Wight Support Group or be part of a scheme that makes a real practical difference to someone living with sight loss? Guide Dogs are currently seeking volunteers to do just that as part of their ground breaking My Guide scheme.
My Guide is a service provided by Guide Dogs to support people who are living with sight loss to get out and about, to do the things they want to do. The role involves providing sighted guide assistance in the Cowes area.
The organisation are also looking for volunteers to join the local Support Group. The groups plan activities and events to engage with the local community and raise funds. They also allow local guide dog owners and other individuals in the Guide Dogs family to meet up and socialise.
Being part of a Support Group will give you the opportunity to have fun taking part in activities and a sense of satisfaction in providing support to Guide Dogs to enable it to provide guide dogs and other mobility services that increase the independence of people living with sight loss.
Alison has been a support group member for 3 years. She said:
“I like helping people, and I like to keep busy. I’ve gained both self-confidence and a feeling of satisfaction that I have helped to improve the lives of other people, even if only in a small way.
“Last year our group raised over £3,500. I enjoy the events and get a ‘buzz’ out of fundraising. It’s very interesting meeting new people from all walks of life.
“What could be better than raising money for a good cause and having fun at the same time?”
