A man has been airlifted to the mainland with potentially life-changing injuries after a trip to the seaside ended in disaster last night (Wednesday).
It was shortly before 22:20 that the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service responded to reports of a man who had sustained serious injuries on the beach at Bembridge.
The casualty had been climbing a pole on top of a groyne when it suddenly snapped, causing him to fall up to 20ft onto the concrete below.
It is understood the man, who was accompanied by a friend, had been attempting to pose for a photograph at the time of the incident.
Multiple ambulance resources were mobilised, with HM Coastguard called in to assist due to the remote location of the incident.
Coastguard Rescue Officers from both Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams were mobilised to the stretch of coastline between The Point and Lane End, where they helped package the casualty before carrying him to the awaiting ambulance some distance away.
Due to the severity of his injuries – believed to include serious head and spinal trauma – the casualty was airlifted from St Mary’s Hospital to Lee-on-Solent by the Coastguard Rescue helicopter at around 05:30 this morning.
He has since been transferred to Southampton’s Major Trauma Centre, where he is receiving specialist treatment.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.

Why wait 7 hours to fly him to a trauma centre if he had head and spine damage, it’s not like St Mary’s could have fixed that, he should have been airlifted straight away, i thought time was critical with trauma patients…..
Such incidents make me angry.
The NHS have huge waiting lists and then because
of a persons stupidity it takes up an hospital bed and
possibly an intensive care bed that a person may
need who is recovering from an operation.
Not to mention the use of an operating theatre and
Surgeons time.
Charges need to be billed to such selfish inconsiderate
individuals, it may sound harsh but it is true.
All around the country even the world so many unnesseccary
accidents are caused day in day out.
Bet you was fun as a kid telling others not to climb trees and mess around incase they hurt them selves
Bet your top of the list in this nanny world
Ah the moronic numpty sees fit to share his views with us again. Bless. I wonder whether this dimwit has ever even financially contributed to our NHS?
Just say you had a family member who required an
Intensive care bed, but due to an idiot doing something
silly, your family member was denied a bed and died
would you be happy.
I have had family members who once could not
get an intensive care bed and fortunately were taken
by an intensive care ambulance to another hospital
about 7 miles away.
SO I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT
GROW UP NUMPTY
Quite possibly the most ridiculous argument put forward I have ever heard….ever! And that’s saying something when you have to contend with the absolute drivel you post on here daily!!
So your family member got an intensive care bed then?? So literally the opposite of what you are saying? Not that I, nor anyone else, believes that load of tosh!
Maybe you or a loved one will be in need of an
Intensive care bed and won’t be able to get one
due to
persons climbing poles
persons overtaking on blind bends
persons speeding
persons overdosing on drugs etc
There are only so many intensive care beds in the country
also look at the large NHS WAITING LIST
If people stopped doing silly things the waiting list etc
wouldn’t be so long.
ONE DAY YOU MIGHT UNDERSTAND, UNTIL THEN GROW UP!
AS I SAY EACH DAY ONCE A NUMPTY ALWAYS A NUMPTY
AND YOU CANNOT EDUCATE A NUMPTY
FACT!
Bless you.
it’s called an accident for a reason!!as a result of a moment of madness his life has changed and not for the good,do you know what the words “youn fun?living life to the fullest whatever that may be?actually means or were you born a boring old fa.t
Yes but think of the consequences before
climbing.
Look at all the idiots who fall from roofs etc
by climbing.
unless they should be on a roof etc don’t be on a roof.
I walk past lamp posts everyday when walking the dog
I DON’T CLIMB UP THEM!
Stupid is as stupid does. A typical testosteronial moment.
Well he won’t be doing that again…(I hope)
Mind you, I expect the ‘personal injury’ lawyers will be circling like vultures..
encouraging him to sue the council (or whoever owns the pole) for damages, due to it being unsafe for climbing & no warning signs…
Who needs a warning sign, it is obvious it
is not the thing to do in the first place.
Who needs a warning sign? Presumably, the person who climbed the pole…
If you think that it’s obvious.. you are obviously underestimating the average IQ of people…
Honestly, some of you people…this is a terrible story about someone, probably young, with life-changing injuries. Have a bit of compassion for goodness’ sake. It could happen to any of us in a moment of madness.
Awful for him & his family. One moment of fun & a life might be changed forever. I hope he makes a good recovery
Why do people do silly things, it is obvious
carrying out such a prank is dangerous.
Now it overwhelms the struggling NHS
