A solo sailor circumnavigating the UK to raise vital funds in the fight against Parkinson’s disease is set to call at the Isle of Wight next week as he enters the final stages of his gruelling voyage.
Richard Brocklesby has been sailing around the UK aboard his 28ft boat Ketty 11 since leaving Plymouth in May.
His challenge was inspired by the diagnosis of a lifelong friend with Parkinson’s, having previously watched both his grandfather and aunt battle the incurable condition.
Richard originally bought Ketty 11 as a ‘fixer-upper’, without plans for such an ambitious voyage, but his friend’s diagnosis gave the boat a new purpose.
Since setting off, the solo sailor has navigated the coastlines of England, the Isle of Man, Wales, Ireland and Scotland in an effort to raise money for Parkinson’s UK.
He is now tackling the south-western and final leg of his circumnavigation, with an Isle of Wight stop scheduled along the way.
Richard is due to arrive at Yarmouth on 26th August, having called at Southsea Premier Marina the previous day.
From the Isle of Wight, he plans to continue towards Poole or Studland on 27th August, followed by Lulworth on 28th August.
His unusual fundraising effort is difficult to miss at sea, with a giant QR code printed onto Ketty 11’s mainsail allowing people to make donations to the cause.
Richard has said:
“I looked at Ketty 11 and suddenly knew her purpose.
“Parkinson’s has taken a heavy toll on my family and friends. There’s no cure yet, but every mile sailed brings us closer to funding one.”
Although most of Richard’s journey around the UK has now been completed, his fundraising campaign continues as he visits harbours during the final leg of the challenge.
Islanders will have the opportunity to meet Richard when he calls at Yarmouth on 26th August.
