A hole-in-one helped Helen Whittaker secure the Ladies Scratch Championship as Westridge Golf Club hosted another busy week of competition.
The Ladies Championships took centre stage at Westridge over the weekend of 15th–16th August, with Whittaker claiming the Scratch crown and Claire Matejowsky triumphing in the Handicap competition.
Whittaker enjoyed a memorable opening round on Saturday, recording a hole-in-one at the 9th on her way to a score of 76.
Despite a difficult turn, her round gave her a commanding 10-shot advantage over Jasmine Royl, who continued her good form with an 86. Matejowsky was 3rd overnight after carding an 89.
That round also put Matejowsky in a strong position in the Handicap Championship, with her nett 61 – 5 under par – giving her a 2-shot advantage.
Shelagh Merrifield was close behind with a nett 63, while Royl remained in contention on 67.
Sunday brought another intriguing day of golf, with Royl mounting a determined challenge in the Scratch competition.
She matched Whittaker’s second-round score of 81, but the overnight deficit proved too much to overcome, leaving Whittaker to take the championship with a 157 total.
Royl finished runner-up on 167, while Jan Little produced the move of the day with an 87 to climb into 3rd on 179.
The Handicap Championship went down to the wire.
Merrifield produced another strong round to set the clubhouse target, but overnight leader Matejowsky did enough with a 2-under-par nett 64 to secure the title.
Royl completed the top 3.
Elsewhere during the week, Pete Holton took Division 1 honours in Wednesday’s Stableford with 36 points, while an impressive 39 points gave Melvyn Pratley victory in Division 2.
John Stephens topped the 9 Hole Stableford held across Friday and Saturday with 21 points, one ahead of Clive Martin and Melvyn Probyn.
Sunday’s Stableford saw Chris Royl produce the week’s highest Division 1 score, winning with 41 points ahead of Trevor Gosset on 39 and Nikki Glasgow on 38.
Division 2 was decided on countback, with Steve Sansford edging Alan Harnett after both returned 39 points.
