The Yachtsmen survived a dramatic 2nd-half comeback to secure their place in the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup this evening (Wednesday).
Cowes travelled to Longmeadow following Saturday’s impressive FA Vase victory at Hamble Club, where they won 2-4, and created the first chance after 11 minutes when Scott McFarlane sent a free-kick narrowly wide.
The visitors took the lead in the 19th minute when Charlie Marsek squared the ball across goal for Ashton Cox to tap home from close range (0-1).
Cowes continued to enjoy the lion’s share of possession and chances, with Cox twice denied by the Whitchurch goalkeeper. Marsek then pounced on a loose pass from the home keeper in the 34th minute, drove into the penalty area and found Cox, whose shot went wide.
The Yachtsmen doubled their advantage in unusual circumstances in the 41st minute. The Whitchurch goalkeeper picked up a backpass, giving Cowes an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area, which McFarlane stroked into the corner (0-2).

Cowes started the 2nd half brightly, with Marsek turning sharply and forcing a good save from the home goalkeeper in the 48th minute.
Just 3 minutes later, the Yachtsmen appeared to be cruising. A long throw found Cox at the back post and the forward tapped home his 2nd goal of the evening (0-3).
Euan Biggs was replaced by Otto West in the 62nd minute, but the complexion of the tie changed almost immediately. Whitchurch pulled a goal back from a long throw a minute later (1-3).
Cox made way for Seth Arnold in the 68th minute before another long throw caused problems for the Cowes defence, with Whitchurch scoring again in the 69th minute (2-3). Having been 3 goals down, the hosts were suddenly within touching distance of an equaliser.
Cowes produced the perfect response. Arnold had been on the pitch for only 2 minutes when he fired a fine strike into the bottom corner in the 70th minute (2-4), marking his Cowes debut with what would prove to be the winning goal.
Jason Ince replaced Luke Glynn in the 79th minute, making his first Cowes 1st-team appearance since 2021, but Whitchurch were not finished.
A mix-up at the back allowed the hosts to score their 3rd in the 81st minute (3-4), leaving Cowes facing a tense final 9 minutes as Whitchurch pushed for an equaliser.
The Yachtsmen held firm through the closing stages. Connor Furmidge replaced McFarlane in the final minute for his first appearance since 2024, before the final whistle confirmed Cowes’ passage into the next round.

YOUNG VICS SIDE BOW OUT OF HAMPSHIRE SENIOR CUP
A youthful East Cowes Vics side exited the Hampshire Senior Cup after a hard-fought defeat at Alton on Tuesday evening.
Vics fielded an inexperienced side for the first-round tie and recovered well after conceding inside the opening 2 minutes.
Alton’s early corner caused problems, with Alex Lever’s header crashing against the crossbar before Emmanuel Acheampong reacted quickest to fire home the rebound.
Despite the setback, Vics settled into the game and remained firmly in the contest throughout the first half. The Islanders created openings of their own, with Caleb Neale unable to direct a low cross on target under pressure.
George Bridi then produced the standout moment of the half. After Alton were awarded a penalty, the Vics goalkeeper dived full length to keep out Callum Kenny’s spot-kick and preserve the one-goal deficit.
Half Time: Alton 1-0 East Cowes Vics
Vics introduced Gabe Wall for Dylan Wightwick shortly after the restart, but Alton doubled their lead on 54 minutes. Hadif Darwysh’s curling free-kick from wide on the left drifted beyond Bridi and went in off the far post.
Harrison Yates replaced Toby Snow before Isaac Glynn came on for Jordan Chapman as Vics searched for a route back into the tie.
The young Islanders continued to compete, but Alton defended their advantage well and Vics were unable to find the breakthrough they needed.
Full Time: Alton 2-0 East Cowes Vics
East Cowes Vics: Bridi, Newbold, West, Snow, Hjorns, Chapman, Hart, Neale, Wightwick, Mooney, Haward. Subs: Deacon, Wall, Yates, Glynn, Dyer.
