Plans to turn a property in Ryde into a 7-bedroom House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) have gained qualified support from Ryde Town Council, despite concerns from a resident over parking, noise and the loss of a family home.
Mr and Miss Jerram are seeking permission for a change of use at 1 Butts Road in Haylands.
Ryde Town Council has told the Isle of Wight Council that it does not object to the application, subject to a parking provision assessment being carried out which supports the additional parking required.
The applicants’ agent, Holbrook Architectural Services, has previously said the proposal is not considered to result in ‘unacceptable harm’ to the character of the area, neighbouring amenity or highway safety.
It said the property would provide shared residential accommodation with communal facilities appropriate to the scale of occupation.
However, the proposals have attracted an objection from a member of the public, David Kelly, who has called for the application to be refused.
He has raised concerns about the loss of a family dwelling, increased occupation compared with a single household, the potential impact on neighbouring residents, additional parking pressure and cumulative changes to the character of the neighbourhood.
Mr Kelly said:
“A property occupied by multiple unrelated individuals generally creates more comings and goings, more visitor movements, more use of shared areas, and more scope for late-night disturbance than a single family home.
“This intensification is likely to increase noise, nuisance, and general disturbance for nearby residents.”
The Isle of Wight Council’s public consultation on the application is due to run until 7th September.
A decision on the proposals is currently due by 30th September.
