Customer voting is now open at Sainsbury’s Newport, Freshwater and Sandown stores for the retailer’s Local Charity of the Year scheme.
Each Sainsbury’s supermarket and convenience store has shortlisted a maximum of 3 charities to put forward for the customer vote. Customers can vote through the in-store voting system or online at www.sainsburyslocalcharity.co.uk, between Monday 13th and Sunday 26th June.
The shortlisted charities in the running are:
Newport:
• Ability Dogs 4 Young People which train assistance dogs to enhance the independence of disabled young people and children living on the Isle of Wight. Training the Ability Dogs to help with physical and mental disabilities, including cerebral palsy, autism and epilepsy.
• The Joe Ellis Trust helps Isle of Wight children who have cancer and their families in their time of need. The Trust was set up in loving memory of Joe Ellis, who died 30/6/14, at the tender age of just 13 years, after being diagnosed with Primary Mediastinum large B cell Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
• Woman’s Refuge – an island based charity who provides support and advice to Women and their children living with domestic abuse wishing to escape domestic violence,
Sandown:
• Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance – HIOWAA exists to bring immediate, life-saving critical care to patients when they need it most. The Air Ambulance flies 365 days a year, both day and night, providing an efficient, prompt response to road traffic collisions, sporting accidents, collapses and many other incidents throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

• Sophie Rolf Trust – Kissy Puppy – Sadly Sophie lost her battle at the end of 2013 but KissyPuppy intends to continue to provide support to children on the Isle of Wight suffering from life-shortening conditions and is now KissyPuppy – The Sophie Rolf Trust.
• IW Special Olympics – A charitable organisation group, running all year round Sport & Competitions for athletes with learning disabilities.
The winning charity will receive a year’s worth of fundraising and awareness raising. Sainsbury’s Local Charity of the Year is now in its eighth year and has raise over £11 million for local charities across the UK.
