A man sustained an injury to his chest – thought to have been caused by a knife – during a public order incident at Newport Bus Station last night (Sunday).
It has been confirmed that 3 men have been arrested and remain in custody in connection with the incident on Orchard Street, which occurred just before 19:00.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police were called to the town centre following reports of a fight involving 3 men.
Officers rushed to the scene and located a 41-year-old man from Sandown, who was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
A cordon was quickly established around Bowling Green Lane with detectives from Newport CID called in to investigate the incident.
A short while later, 2 men were stopped on South View, off Trafalgar Road – with responding officers identifying that 1 of the men, a 23-year-old from East Cowes, had an injury to his chest.
He was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital but later discharged, before then being arrested on suspicion of affray.
A 24-year-old man from Newport was also arrested at South View on suspicion of affray.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say they believe a knife may have been involved in the incident, with a bladed article seized.
Detectives are continuing to carry out enquiries in the area today to establish what happened.
