Works to improve pedestrian safety on the A3056 at Hale Common have been completed ahead of schedule, with the road now fully reopened today (Wednesday) following several weeks of disruption.
The latest phase of the scheme has seen new footways constructed between Watery Lane and an existing bus stop near Isle of Wight Tomatoes, providing a dedicated route for pedestrians where previously they had to walk along grass verges beside the busy road.
New uncontrolled crossing points have also been installed to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the A3056.
The improvements form the second phase of a wider programme of safety works at Hale Common, funded through the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund. The overall project aims to reduce the risk of collisions while making it safer and easier for people to access nearby bus stops, businesses and public rights of way on foot.
Confirming the completion of the works, Island Roads said:
“Works at Hale Common to improve safety for pedestrians have finished ahead of schedule and the road has reopened.
“Thanks to the community for their patience and to The Fighting Cocks pub in Arreton for the welcome refreshments they provided to our crews working in record-breaking heat.”

All temporary traffic management has now been removed, allowing traffic to flow normally along the route once again.
