A prisoner accused of being involved in a mutiny at HMP Isle of Wight – which saw a tactical teams called in to defuse the situation – has seen his case sent to Crown Court.
George Speer, 26, now of HMP Pentonville, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday) charged with an unusual offence of participating in prison mutiny.
Prosecutor Steven Woolfe said that the alleged offending occurred at HMP Isle of Wight on 3rd November last year, following a prisoner-led demonstration.
Tactical teams were brought over from the mainland to defuse the situation, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Due to the charge being indictable only, no plea was entered and the case was adjourned to the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 17th August.
A co-defendant in the case is due before the court later this week, it is understood.
