Hungry Islanders wasted little time getting through the doors of Newport’s brand new McDonald’s today (Wednesday), with crowds descending on the drive-thru restaurant as lunchtime arrived.
Around 20 people had gathered ahead of the 11:00 opening at Newport Retail Park, off St George’s Way, eager to be among the first customers at the Isle of Wight’s newest McDonald’s.
The very first order through the tills was a medium Chicken McNuggets meal.
As the morning moved into lunchtime, the initially small gathering quickly grew, with significantly more customers making their way inside and vehicles arriving at the new drive-thru.
The restaurant, known as St George’s Field, has created around 125 jobs and features 141 seats, an outdoor children’s play area, solar panels and a separate entrance for McDelivery drivers.
Its opening comes after years of plans for a McDonald’s at the former Newport IW football ground site, with the restaurant forming part of the wider Newport Retail Park development. Other stores such as Costa, Aldi, B&M, Wren Kitchens and Superdrug are due to open by Christmas.

The next McDonald’s set to open on the Isle of Wight will be in Lake, with the doors expected to open in mid-2027.
