A lone swimmer attempting to cross the Solent was rescued by the crew of Wightlink’s St Faith ferry on Sunday evening after getting into difficulty against the tide and wind.
Shortly after departing Fishbourne, Captain Bill and the crew spotted the swimmer in the water.
Although assistance was initially declined, the crew remained concerned after observing that the individual was making little progress despite continuously swimming towards the mainland.
Island Echo understands the swimmer had already nearly been hit by 2 boats earlier in the day, having departed from Gosport.
The crew carefully monitored the situation while working alongside HM Coastguard, Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and other responding vessels.
The swimmer was eventually recovered safely from the water and taken ashore.
Wightlink has thanked Captain Bill and the crew of St Faith for their swift response, highlighting that protecting life at sea is one of the most important responsibilities its crews hold.
The ferry operator also expressed its gratitude to passengers for their patience and understanding after the incident resulted in delays to the service.

I agree. No one should swim the Solent without a safety boat, or kayak, or similar. One selfish individual caused hundreds to be delayed on their ferry crossing. The swimmer needs to be held accountable.
