Isle of Wight AC and Ryde Harriers athlete Henry McLuckie produced a world-class performance to finish 2nd in the Morton Mile in Dublin, Ireland, last Friday (10th July), setting a huge personal best of 3min 51.38sec after 18 days of high-altitude training in St Moritz.
McLuckie made a fast start and quickly settled into 5th place as the field covered the opening 440 yards in 57 seconds, with the leading contenders already to the fore.
Maintaining the pace through 880 yards, it soon became clear that quick times were on the cards.
With around 500 yards remaining, McLuckie began to move through the field before closing on race favourite Sam Prakel of the United States along the back straight.
The pair broke clear of the rest of the field and battled all the way to the finish, with Prakel narrowly holding off the Isle of Wight athlete in a thrilling sprint for the line.
McLuckie’s time of 3min 51.38sec for the mile is described as a world class performance and moves him to second in this year’s UK rankings, behind former world champion Jake Wightman.
Following his victory in Stockholm and his impressive run in Dublin, McLuckie will now continue his season with another high-quality 1,500 metres race in Liege, Belgium.
