Pink Power Club, a new women-only gym where members can book the entire workout space to themselves, is opening on the Isle of Wight this week.
Founder Tanya Brodie has spoken to Island Echo about her vision to take the stress and intimidation out of keeping fit – and how the Pink Power Club is a logical next step in her beauty and wellness empire.
Tanya Brodie opened The Beauty Spot at 128 Pyle Street in 2008, when she was just 21, where her love of health, beauty and wellness created a one-stop destination for women, from counselling to advanced aesthetics, sports massages, nails and skin treatments.
Speaking to Island Echo ahead of the official opening of the space tomorrow (Wednesday), Tanya explained how she has created a brand that gives women access to everything they need and want in terms of their appearance and mental health; the only thing that was missing as part of that was somewhere for her customers to better their physical health.
Being an ex-powerlifter who has previously won the British and European Powerlifting championships, Tanya has always had a love for training; however realised how many women talk themselves out of going to the gym because of the shared space and mixed-gender environment.
She said:
“A lot of my clients ask me if I’m still going to the gym, and I always say, ‘ Yes, why don’t you come with? ‘ but they say they can’t go in there.
And then I had a brainwave one day, and I was like, well, let’s do one that’s only for girls where you can book your time slot so you’re on your own, and you don’t feel stressed or intimidated about going in.”
With pink dumbbells and machinery lining the room, the Pink Power Club at 129 Pyle Street is a personal space that feels warm and inviting, a space where any woman can come to train at any level, with space for yoga mats, specialist machinery to target glutes, as well as a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom with free to use products such as shower gel, shampoo and conditioner as well as skincareproducts that are used in her salon.
Tanya said:
“The space is available 24 hours a day, and there’s different degrees of membership depending on what time of day you want to train. So if you’re a middle-of-the-night trainer, then your membership’s really cheap and you just email to book your slot.”
Tanya said that memberships can be purcashed through the Pink Power Club website where they range from £35-£105 a month with the best membership package offering 24-hour key-fob access, unlimited use of the sauna at The Beauty Spot (TBS) across the road, 50% off of beauty contouring at TBS, an exclusive PPC discount with Macros food prep, 10% off Myotherapy & Counselling as well as 10% off Tania Coco personal training and much more.
Speaking to Tanya about the importance of workout classes and turning the gym into a fun and social experience, she said despite the space being designed to be used one at a time or with a personal trainer, she understands that fitness can also be a time to socialise and therefore is more than happy for groups to work out together. As well as this, she understands that a lot of personal trainers are men, and therefore is happy for them to continue their role in the space.
Touching on whether men can use the gym since the space has a strict one-at-a-time rule, Tanya said:
“Obviously this is traditionally a women’s-only space so we are not going to advertise that men can use it, but if someone wants to come with their partner then they should just email.
“I don’t want the space to exclude anyone or anyone’s methods of training, I just did’nt want a space where anyone can feel intimidated, and thats why everyone has to book their slot and stick to it to ensure if people want to be alone in the space – they 100% will be.”
Tanya has also said that as the space progresses and the business finds its feet, more group classes and alternative wellness classes such as soundbaths will take place.
Speaking on the next step in her health and beauty venture, Tanya said:
“It’s quite niche, like it’s ladies only and I am aware that not everyone wants to train in Barbie’s gym, but I think it’s really cool.
“I am just so excited for it, it makes me smile every time I come in here.”
The Pink Power Club is officially open 24-hours a day as of tomorrow; more information on memberships and how it works can be found here.
